$21,000 Raised for Three Local Breast Cancer Charities during Wine & Wig 2015

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (November 3, 2015)—The third annual West Michigan Woman Wine & Wig Gala was a huge success raising $21,000 for three local breast cancer charities: Susan G. Komen Michigan, the American Cancer Society, and Gilda's Club Grand Rapids. This is the first time these three charities have come together to collectively support one event.

"The event has grown each year. Attendance was up. Sponsorship was up. And most importantly, the money raised to end breast cancer and support survivors and their loved ones grew too," said West Michigan Woman president and publisher, Kasie Smith. "We're so pleased that Wine & Wig has become the local premier party of breast cancer awareness month."

Save the date! The 4th annual West Michigan Woman Wine & Wig Gala will be held on October 15, 2016 at the Grand Rapids Art Museum. The event will once again benefit Susan G. Komen Michigan, the American Cancer Society, and Gilda's Club Grand Rapids.

Wine & Wig is a whimsical event where attendees enjoy food, wine, dancing, and auctions all while wearing wigs as a sign of solidarity with those coping with breast cancer or a cancer treatment that causes hair loss.

Three Local Cancer Charities and West Michigan Woman Magazine Join Forces to Address Breast Cancer in West Michigan.

The American Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen Michigan, and Gilda's Club Grand Rapids have been named the charities that will benefit from this year's West Michigan Woman Wine & Wig Gala.

"Bringing together the American Cancer Society, Komen Michigan, and Gilda's Club Grand Rapids allows our event proceeds to have a holistic impact on women's breast health," said Kasie Smith, publisher of West Michigan Woman magazine. "From research to treatment and support, these three organizations represent some of the best our community has to offer, and we are proud to partner with them."

This is the first time that West Michigan Woman has broadened its Wine & Wig efforts of to support an entire cause, rather than one charity. It is also the first time all three charities will collectively work together.

"As a breast cancer survivor, I know firsthand how intimidating a diagnosis and treatment plan can be," said Jennifer Jurgens, executive director, Komen Michigan. "When organizations like ours choose to collaborate, we can be more patient-centered and a stronger force in the fight against breast cancer."

"The programs we offer on a local level complement the programs and services offered by Komen Michigan and Gilda's Clubs. We don't overlap what we do in West Michigan, and we each fill a vital need," said American Cancer Society Community Manager Renee Ricard-Burmeister.

Wine & Wig is a whimsical event where attendees enjoy food, wine, and a silent auction, all while wearing wigs as a sign of solidarity with those coping with breast cancer or a cancer treatment that causes hair loss.

"Wine & Wig is a light-hearted, fun-filled night of camaraderie to benefit a serious cause. We are thrilled to be part of it and working in concert to raise awareness of our mission and the important work of all involved," said Gilda's Club Grand Rapids President Wendy Wigger. "Just as our namesake, Gilda Radner, understood the importance of finding reasons to laugh even during life's toughest moments, we see this event as an opportunity to have fun."

West Michigan Woman Wine & Wig was established in 2013 to show financial support for organizations whose mission is dedicated to improving the lives of local women in the West Michigan community, all while having fun. More than 175 people attend each year.
